Savory Grille Newsletter: Later Summer, 2010

Hello Friends,

At this time of year, Savory Grille is all about seasonality: Local tomatoes, sweet corn, cucumbers and cantaloupes are sweet as the season can offer. These are pleasures of the palate that cannot be deferred. Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero. And remember that Horace was a devout epicurean—even without tasting Berks County heirloom tomatoes!

As expected, summer’s bounty spills over to the cocktail list, with The Cantaloupe Tonight (cantaloupe-infused vodka capped with fresh cantaloupe sorbet) delivering refreshing flavor juicy melons with an adults-only kick.

Although there may be some concerns about Gulf catches at present, fish arriving from the Atlantic is just beautiful, from striped bass (wild rockfish) and halibut to mahi mahi and tuna.

The recent Dr. Joe Jurgielewicz duck dinner was, as always, a smashing success. Despite muggy weather, a four-course meal of lighter fare—served on the patio—proved well received. The evening of great food and great people with punctuated by an entertaining description of each menu offering by me, Shawn F. Doyle CEC, between courses.

Michael Brenfleck, a graduate of Northampton Community College’s culinary program and the newest addition to our staff, has shown his Savory colors at the 15th annual “Taste of Elegance” pork competition: Chef Mike, who captured first place, will represent Pennsylvania in the national competition.

Looking forward to September, Savory Grille will host a wine dinner featuring a presentation by Jay Nee, Liberty Wine division, of Southern Wine and Spirits. Call or check the website for details!

Finally, congratulations to the winner of this month’s automatic drawing from the Savory Grille electronic mailing list. We look forward to seeing Linda & Chris Kleman of Barto, who will receive a $50 gift certificate. Enjoy!

Cheers.
